About the DASHER project

These resources were developed by Children by Choice and WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention Service. It was funded by 100 Women and the Queensland government – Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

They were developed and co-designed with a group of amazing women with intellectual and learning disabilities and assisted by consultation with key stakeholders from violence, disability and health-related services.

We would like to thank all the women and professionals who helped us with this project, giving their time, expertise and experiences to support the development of this group of resources.

People with intellectual disabilities don’t always receive adequate relationships and sex education. Communication and comprehension may also be a barrier for some people, which may affect a person’s capacity to make an informed decision about safe relationships, consent, contraception and pregnancy and parenting choices. Accessible or easy English information resources help people build their knowledge around their own reproductive rights. As one of the project consultants said, “we can make our own decisions, if we know all the information”.

The aim of these resources is to assist professionals or supporters in helping people with varying intellectual or learning disabilities improve understanding of consent, contraception, pregnancy options and reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA). It will assist people to recognise red flags of RCA as well.

We also hope the resources will assist professionals or supporters in having clear conversations about key reproductive and health rights issues with clients or patients who may struggle with reading, verbal communication and auditory comprehension.

The more factual and accessible the information, the more likely a person will be able to make the best decisions for themselves.
