WWILD’s Loud and Proud Project – 2024-2026

WWILD worked alongside women and non-binary people with intellectual disability on an exciting 2-year violence prevention project called the Loud and Proud Project.

The project participants had experienced either domestic and family violence, or sexual violence, or both. Women and non-binary people with intellectual disability were included at all levels of the project.

The aim of the project was to build awareness across the community of the experiences of violence and abuse for people with intellectual disabilities. It was also to build the skills, knowledge and capacity of the participants in self-advocacy and systems advocacy.

This project was generously supported by the Brisbane South Primary Health Network.

The Advice Group

The Advice Group was a small group of advisors that met every month throughout the project to help co-design the Experts Group and the launch.

The Experts Group

The experts group worked together across a number of workshops to learn more about why violence happens and what does prevention, advocacy and resource development look like. They then came up with ideas for violence prevention resources. They wanted to seek change from governments, services, and systems. These advocacy activities included:

Develop an awareness campaign (see below)

Writing a letter to the Prime Minister and local Federal members in the Brisbane South region

3 meetings with 3 Queensland Members of Parliament

A meeting with 1 Australian Member of Parliament

A meeting with the Director-General of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety

Speaking at a Domestic Violence forum

Participation in the Victims’ Commissioner consultation

Participating in the No More 2026 rally against violence to women.

Peer Workers

We also had two peer workers work with us throughout the project to facilitate groups and events.

Awareness Campaign

The aim was to make more people aware of the high rates of violence towards people with disability and why this happens. The resources in this campaign are focused on helping more people find ways to reduce violence.

The campaign included:

2 awareness posters – Stop the Violence Poster and Game Poster – Violence is never a game
A fact sheet – Stop the Violence Fact Sheet
And a social media campaign (see below)

Loud and Proud Project Launch – 25th June 2026

The members of the advice group, experts’ group and their supporters came together at the Wynnum Community Centre. Together they celebrated and showcased all the knowledge, learnings and developed resources.
